Community Advisor Job Description


The Community Advisor is a live-in student staff position.   CAs are responsible for the development of a floor community, assisting in the safety and security of the building, and participating in a rotational duty program.  The CA will report to the A/RHD of the assigned building.  The CA will be responsible for the items listed below as well as other duties as assigned.

 

Community Development

  1. Plan events and publicize opportunities to the needs of your community in accordance with expectations set forth by the department and your A/RHD.
  2. Interact individually and in small groups with residents of your floor, community, and building.
  3. Support leadership development opportunities for residents of your floor, community and building.
  4. Create an inclusive community where people feel comfortable expressing themselves.
  5. Be aware of campus and community resources and refer students to them as necessary.
  6. Establish community standards.

 

Administration

  1. Complete tasks accurately and on time.
  2. Attend all required meetings and trainings.
  3. Understand and utilize necessary programs.
  4. Accurately complete necessary room change paperwork.

 

Role Modeling

  1. Demonstrate a strong academic commitment and understanding that CAs are students first and need to maintain a 2.5 GPA.
  2. Incorporate your Top 5 Strengths into the work that you do.
  3. Know and follow all University and Department policies.
  4. Practice ethical behavior and be able to educate others on ethical decision-making.
  5. Understand how peer pressure affects the position and challenge those who attempt to use peer pressure to their advantage.
  6. Be a supportive leader in the Department of Residence Life and challenge others to do the same.
  7. Manage time effectively.
  8. Demonstrate healthy and effective stress management techniques.

 

Communication

  1. Be a functional member of a staff team and work effectively with others.
  2. Effectively communicate with students and staff in a timely and resolution-focused manner.
  3. Relay important information to those who need it and ask questions when clarification on information is necessary.
  4. Utilize digital communication to ensure that it is appropriate, positive and done for the betterment of the community.
  5. Reflect on speaking skills and take constructive feedback on those skills in an attempt to improve audience engagement when speaking in public.

 

Student Safety and Security 

  1. Know emergency procedures and how to use them.
  2. Know and enforce the policies held within the Community Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.
  3. Confront policy violations appropriately and effectively.
  4. Learn and utilize empathy and attending behaviors.
  5. Understand when and ask for assistance in confrontation as needed.
  6. Write understandable, clear, and grammatically correct incident reports.
  7. Participate in on duty rotation as defined by the community in which you work.
  8. Perform required Security Assistant and/or Desk Worker tasks.
